    Useful Tips

    WEATHER

Due to Guanacaste, Costa Rica’s moderate tropical climate, and gentle atmospheric conditions, any time of year is a good time to visit.

The average temperature in Costa Rica is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, regardless of the month. Sun is plentiful even in the heart of the rainy season, and the country’s tropical forests are full of life throughout the year.

Guanacaste, on the Pacific coast of the country’s Nicoya Peninsula, has especially favorable weather that welcomes outdoor activities, experiences in nature, and lively local events throughout the year.

    CURRENCY

Costa Rica’s local currency is the colón, available in coins of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500, and bills of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000. The exchange rate typically ranges between 550 and 600 colones per U.S. dollar.

In Las Catalinas Beach Town, all vendors accept payment by credit card, debit card, Costa Rican colones and U.S. dollars. Most businesses throughout the Guanacaste region also accept major international credit cards and offer the option to pay in either colones or U.S. dollars.

ATMs are available at Liberia International Airport, San José International Airport, and along Routes 911 and 180 leading into town. There are two ATMs in Las Catalinas, one at Copper & Stone and another one next to Santarena Hotel

    TIME ZONE

Costa Rica is in the Central Standard Time zone year-round. People tend to adjust to the rhythms of nature quickly, waking up naturally (and relaxed) with the sun around 5:30 am.

The first hours of daylight are the best time for outdoor activities. The sun is not as hot, and activities like hiking and biking are ideal as the sky is nearly always clear, the air is fresh, and the wildlife is most visible.

    LANGUAGE

Spanish is the official and main language in Costa Rica

The phrases “Pura Vida” and “Tico/Tica” show the unique identity and lively culture of Costa Rica.

Here are some useful phrases you can practice ahead of your trip:

    • "¿Puede ayudarme?": (Can you help me?) - A useful starting point for asking for assistance.
    • "¿Cómo llego a...?": (How do I get to...?) - Ask for directions to a specific location.
    • "¿Dónde está...?": (Where is...?) - Inquire about the location of a specific place.
    • "A una cuadra.": (In one block.) - Helpful for explaining distances.
    • "Por favor.": (Please.) - Always use this when making requests.
    • "Gracias.": (Thank you.) - A polite way to express appreciation.
    • "Disculpe.": (Excuse me.) - Use this to get someone's attention or apologize.
    • "Con mucho gusto.": (With great pleasure.) - A common response to "Gracias".
